Obituary

Douglas Arthur Kopp passed away on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of faith, service, and love for his family and community.

Doug was born on January 29, 1944, in Chicago, Illinois. He was named after General Douglas MacArthur, a fitting namesake for a man deeply committed to service throughout his life. In his early childhood, Doug's family moved from Chicago to Breedsville, Michigan, where his father pursued a dream of becoming a farmer.

Doug attended Lakeside Elementary, a one-room schoolhouse in Breedsville, through the eighth grade and went on to graduate from Bangor High School in 1961. He then attended Western Michigan University on an ROTC scholarship, earning a bachelor's degree in Chemistry. Following college, Doug served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army for two years.

In September 1967, after a seven-year courtship, Doug married the love of his life, Diane Walton, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Watervliet. They made their home in Coloma, where they raised four children and built a life full of love and community. Doug had a successful career as a national technical sales leader and was part of the founding team of Coloma Computer Company.

A man of deep faith, Doug was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Watervliet, where he served as a Lector, Eucharistic Minister, and member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also involved in volunteer efforts at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Holland. Doug supported many organizations throughout his life, including a being 25-year volunteer of Birthright.

Doug enjoyed a wide variety of hobbies, including fishing, gardening, biking, tennis, drone flying, and bridge. In retirement, he and Diane moved to Nettles Island, Florida, where they developed lasting friendships and took on leadership roles in both the local tennis and bridge clubs.

Above all, Doug cherished his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Diane Kopp; four children: Doug (Zita Abel) Kopp, Brian (Lisa) Kopp, Jennifer (Mike) Owens, and Jeremy (Roxy Shabestari) Kopp; six grandchildren: Bret, Shawn, and Lucas Kopp, and Cameron, Evan, and MJ Owens; his brother Harry Kopp; sister Connie Kopp; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Frances (Zawadaski) Kopp, and his sister Barbara Munn.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 14, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Hutchins Funeral Home in Watervliet, with the Rosary recited at 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, October 15, at 11:00 AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Watervliet, followed by burial at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Birthright of St. Joseph, St. Joseph Catholic Parish in Watervliet, or Our Lady of the Lake in Holland.
