Obituary

Edward's life began Jan. 16, 1936, in Watervliet. He was a lifelong resident of Bainbridge Township and graduated in 1954 from Watervliet High School. Edward met the love of his life, Carole Hosbein in 1952 at a picnic, and they were blessed with eight beautiful children. Edward enjoyed working as a farmer and vinegar and wine maker. Outside of farming, his hobbies included writing poetry and songwriting. His song, "Rosalyn" was chosen from the Songwriter's Club of America to be placed on a tribute album for President Jimmy Carter. He was a songbird who blessed his family with creative songs and melodies that filled his home. He was able to guide his family through eloquent words of wisdom and direction. He passed his love of baseball and football with weekend family games on the family farm and at local parks, followed by ice cream gatherings. His gentle demeanor and inviting presence was a gift to all who joined in with the fun. He also was a passionate farmer.

He was a devoted father, brother and grandfather. He was a role model to his family and will be deeply missed.

Edward's loving family includes his seven children: Deborah (Jerry) Barr of Hartford, Pamela Barrre of Alsip, Ill., Mark (Shirley) Birmele of Watervliet, Michael (Denise) Birmele of Eau Claire, Ginger (David) Widger of Weare, N.H., Dixie (John) Phelan of Union Mills, Ind., and Johnathan Birmele of Stevensville; 22 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; his ex-wife and friend, Carole Ross; a brother, Fred (Carol) Birmele of Watervliet; aunt, Minnie Sadler; and seven nieces and nephews.

Edward died Thursday, Aug. 3, at Orchard Grove Nursing Home.

A son, Edward John Birmele Jr.; a brother, Theodore "Ted" Birmele; and his parents, Theodore and Irene (Heuermann) Birmele; preceded Edward in death.
