Harold's life began November 16, 1920 in Kendallville, Indianan. Harold grew up in Indiana, graduating from Mishawaka High School.
He served in the Army Air-Corp, and the 3C's. He was an avid bowler, golfer, ice fisherman, artist, and needle pointer.
Harold belonged to the American Legion and was a member of the IBEW, and was a boy scout leader. He retired after 42 yeas as a Mechanical Maintenance Man at I&M where he performed regular maintenance at the Hydraulic Dam in Mishawaka, worked during electrical shut downs, and even "chipped and melted ice away" from the Elkhart Dam while being tethered to the dam in sub-zero weather.
Marian Bell (Huston) Long, his loving wife of 60 years preceded Harold in reaching Heaven seven years ago. He and Marian participated in square dancing, bowling, and were active members in the Pleasant View Church of Christ in Cassopolis until Harold moved to Watervliet when he started attending the Midway Baptist Church, and then moved into the Willow's Assisted Living, St. Joe about four years ago.
Harold is survived by a loving family which includes: son Mark and Glenda Long of Watervliet; a daughter Sharon May and Coy Bell of Arcadia, FL; grandsons Christopher and Jonathan Long of South Bend and Mishawaka; granddaughters Tasha Fuller of Watervliet and Nicole Mott of Lawrence; six great grandchildren; one great great grandchild on the way; and a brother Dean Long and his wife Marilyn of Bremen, IN.
Harold died Tuesday, September 24, at the Willow's Assisted Living in St. Joseph. Along with his wife Harold is preceded in death by mother, Gertrude (Alabaugh) Long, father Jonathan Long, sisters Dorothy and Edith Long, a brother Don Long, and Skippy his buddy and dog of 13.5 years.
Memorial service will be celebrated Friday, September 27, at 11:00 AM at Midway Baptist Church in Watervliet. Memorials may be made in Harold's memory to Alzheimer's Association. Hutchins Funeral Home in Watervliet is assisting Harold's family with arrangements.
