Helen Lucille Sanders (Lucy) Passed away peacefully on August 3, at Countryside Nursing Home in South Haven, MI. She was born on September 19, 1921 to John and Lou Estella Smith in Sulpher Rock, Ark. She married Preston Sanders on June 6, 1937. In the 72 years they were married they lived in Arkansas, Arizona, State of Washington, and 63 years in Watervliet, MI.
Lucy was a member of Eastern Star Watervliet Chapter for many years serving as Worthy matron, and made many special friends for life.
She worked at the Watervliet Paper Mill for 30 years before retiring. During those years she enjoyed bowling and golfing on the Paper Mill teams with fellow workers who remained friends for her life. Lucy was a member of The First United Methodist Church. Pres and Lucy were both members of the Watervliet Golf Club for many years, where she won the Ladies Championship. After retirement Lucy and Pres spent time golfing, camping, square dancing and traveled to Florida for the winter. Family and friends were always and important part of her life.
She was preceded in death by her mother, father, brother Wright Smith, sister Mildred Weaver, and beloved husband Preston Sanders.
Lucille is survived by: her son Preston (Sue) Sanders of Watervliet; daughters Glynda Kupczak of Waconda, IL, Brenda (Jim) Daggett of South Haven; grandchildren Richard (Faith) Sanders, Robert (Tracy) Sanders, Jackie Sanders all of Stevensville, MI, Christopher (Shelley Dawson) Kupczak of Chicago IL, Andrew (Audrey) Kupczak of Utah, Patrick (Stephanie) Kupczak of Chicago, IL, Dustin (Lisa) Daggett of Twin Lake, MI, and Ryan (Amy) Daggett of Kalamazoo, MI; great grandchildren Dan Sanders, Lexie Sanders, Jackson Sanders, Robert Sanders, Tyler Sanders, Justin Sanders, McKenzie Sanders all of Stevensville, MI, John Dudai of Orlando, FL, Riley Daggett of Mattawan, MI, Kenadie Daggett of Kalamazoo, MI, and Alexis Daggett Twin Lake, MI.
Lucy has three siblings surviving Judy Brown of Judsonia, Ark, Fanny Brown of Montrose, MI and Jerry Smith of Flint, MI; Brother and sister-in-law John (Katie) Sanders of Prescott Valley Arizona. Lucy had many wonderful nieces and nephews from Arizona, Arkansas, and Michigan. Four nieces living near are Ida Meagher of Hartford, MI, Lisa Shafer and Phyllis Clark of Coloma, MI and Janette Cordera of Battle Creek. Lucy had a wonderful faithful friend Dorothy West who always remembered her.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on October 25 at 1:00 PM at the Coloma United Methodist Church on 144 S. Church Street, Coloma, MI. Memorials can be made to Coloma United Methodist Church or Hospice at Home.
