Obituary

Ruth J. Harris of Benton Harbor passed away Nov. 12, 2014, at Royalton Manor in St. Joseph. She was born June 14, 1914, in Chicago. When she was 7, her family moved to Benton Harbor. She graduated from Benton Harbor High School in 1931. On May 24, 1936, she married Francis Harris. Ruth was a manager at the Whitcomb Hotel in her early years but spent most of her life as a homemaker and was known for her homemade rice pudding. Ruth was a lifelong member of Saron Lutheran Church in St. Joseph. Her husband, Francis Harris, preceded her in death, along with her parents, Oscar (Pete) and Amanda Peterson, and brothers, Manfred and Hilding Peterson.
Ruth is survived by a sister-in-law, June Peterson; nephew, James (Gayle) Peterson; niece, Nancy (Jack) Durham; several great- and great-great- nieces and nephews; as well as her godson and caretaker, Ron (Terry) Bjes. Ruth was sweet and kind, an animal lover and touched many hearts.
Funeral services will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 17, at Hutchins Funeral Home in Watervliet, with visitation starting at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Coloma Cemetery.
