Susan "Sue" LaVanway of Riverside formerly of Benton Harbor went to be with her family in the sky on June 14, 2014, with her soul mate at her side. A Celebration of Life will take place Thursday, June 19, visitation will begin at 10:30 AM and her service will follow at 12:00 PM at Red Arrow General Baptist Church in Benton Harbor. Burial will follow at North Shore Memory Gardens. Memorials may be made to Sue's family.

Sue was born December 7, 1954, to the late Charles "Red" Smith and Norma Irene Francis-Smith. She was a loving companion, daughter, sister, and mother. Sue was an avid gardener of lilacs, roses, and marigolds. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Sue loved everyone she met and if you needed anything she was the one who would open her door, home, arms, and heart.

Survivors left to cherish many wonderful memories in their hearts are: her soul mate of over 20 years Jerry T. Saltzgiver; two daughters Kimberlie Smith of Niles and Deana LaVanway of Benton Harbor; four grandchildren Andrew, Jessica, Erica, and Juanita; nine step grandchildren; eight step great grandchildren; three brothers Richard (Madge) Merrill of Sister Lakes, Charles (Carol) Merrill of Missouri, and Douglas (Betty) Smith of Benton Harbor; two sisters Gail (Paul) Oiler and Deanna Roetzel both of Benton Harbor; and many nieces, nephews, and others who called her "Mom", "Nannie", or "Aunt".

Sue was preceded in death by her mother Norma Irene Francis-Smith in 1980, father Charles "Red" Smith in 1988, and a sister Sherry Ann Dorris in 1998.
