Robert’s life began May 13, 1934 in Watervliet, Michigan. He spent his lifetime in Watervliet where he graduated high school and raised his loving family. After high school Robert proudly served his country in the United States Army. Upon returning home from the service Robert drove truck for a while, helping build I-94 and he worked as a machinist retiring from Benton Harbor Engineering. He also prided himself on being a self-taught carpenter. Outside of work you could find Robert enjoying boating, hunting, fishing, attending flea markets, and he always knew the best places to eat. Robert was very devoted to his church Plymouth Congregational in Watervliet where he served as a trustee and Deacon.
Robert was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather to his loving family which includes: his wife Barbara (Shipley) Baker; five children James (Cheryl) Baker and Susan (Ron) Schaefer, Brenda Langston, Karen West, and Phyllis (Tim) Baldwin; 13 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; two sisters Louise Smith and Janet (Robert) Strand; and many nieces and nephews.
Robert died Thursday, July 05, 2018, at Caretel Inns of Lakeland in St. Joseph. His first wife Jolene (Carpenter) Baker, a son Robert Langston, a brother Arthur Baker, and his parents Arthur and Esther (Harris) Baker precede Robert in death. A memorial service will be celebrated Saturday, July 14, at 11:00 AM with visitation prior starting at 10:00 AM at Plymouth Congregational Church in Watervliet.
